Upcoming Astronomy Events

As a service to our community, Sky & Telescope lists astronomy-related events, including star parties, observatory public nights, astronomy talks, and more. Star parties offer dark skies and astronomical fellowship and often cater to families and feature special activities for kids. Public nights give the general public a chance to view the sky through large telescopes, and public talks are a great place to learn the fundamentals of the science and the craft.
You’ll also see online events offered here.
And if you’d like free copies of Sky & Telescope‘s Let’s Go Stargazing flyer or door prizes for your next star party, you can fill out this form.

AAVSO How-to Hour: Visual Photometry of Variable Stars

August 7, 2021 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm EDT

Free

John Toone, an AAVSO observer with over 150,000 observations in the AID, and long-time officer and chart secretary of the British Astronomical Association Variable Star Section (BAA VSS), instructs this How-to Hour over Zoom.

Visual photometry is the original method of recording changes within variable stars and it is as important today as it was 150 years ago when it was the sole means of measuring variable stars. Toone will demonstrate the basic methodology, how it can be optimized, explain the effects of color and the relationship with Johnson V, which is the equivalent electronic photometry passband. Toone will also introduce you to the world’s most prolific visual observers of variable stars.
