Austin Under the Stars
July 28, 2012 @ 12:00 am EDT
The Austin Astronomical Society (AAS), in collaboration with St. Stephen’s Episcopal School, presents to the public Austin Under the Stars (AUTS). AUTS is designed to bring the spectacles of the night sky to the Austin community. This special event, free of charge, is scheduled from 7:30 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, July 28 (rain cancels) and will take place on the St. Stephen’s Campus off of the Capital of Texas Highway at 6500 St. Stephen’s Drive 78746.
Joining AUTS for the sixth year in a row are the folks of the Austin Planetarium. They will be providing 20 minute shows in their mobile planetarium and will be on hand to answer any questions about the progress of their project.
The event will kick off with amateur astronomers from the AAS providing safe solar viewing and discussions on various related topics before moving into darker sky observing once the sun sets. Also featured this year will be a screening of the multi award winning documentary “The City Dark” and an informational display on the threat of light pollution in our urban skies.
Younger astronomers can take part in our “Tour of the Sky” activity and enter their completed sky maps for a chance to win their school a visit by the Austin Planetarium’s mobile dome.
This is an exciting opportunity to introduce the public, of all ages and experience levels, to the wonders of the night sky. Viewable throughout the evening will be phenomenon of the cosmos including; the Moon, Mars and Saturn as well as many stars, globular clusters, nebulae.
