Eastern Iowa Star Party
October 12, 2012 @ 12:00 am - October 14, 2012 @ 12:00 am EDT
The event is located at the St. Ambrose University (SAU) Observatory at the Wapsi River Environmental Education Center. The site is just north of Dixon, Iowa about 20 miles northwest of Davenport, Iowa. The coordinates on Google Earth are 41°46’19.14”N, 90°47’39.07”W
The SAU site has two permanent observatory buildings housing a 14-inch classical cassegrain, 14-inch Newtonian and 12-inch Newtonian telescopes. There is a classroom/meeting room/warming room and indoor restroom facilities. Semi-primitive camping is available on-site for a nominal fee. Other than the camping fee, the event itself is free of charge (donations cheerfully accepted). Attendees are encouraged to bring any astronomical equipment they wish as there will be people observing throughout both nights. If the sky is clear one of our members usually brings out his portable 30-inch diameter Newtonian Telescope with a Dobsonian mount. If you’ve never looked through an instrument of this size you are in for a real treat! Dust lanes and spiral galaxy details are readily visible and globular clusters take on a three-dimensional appearance.
