Julian Starfest 2011
August 25, 2011 @ 12:00 am - August 28, 2011 @ 12:00 am EDT
Julian Starfest 2011! Starfest returns for its fourth annual appearance at Menghini Winery from August 25th through the 28th.
Starfest, an astronomy exhibition and star party is open to the public, daily from 9:00 am on the 6th. It will feature astronomy vendors selling astronomical equipment ranging from binoculars, telescopes, eyepieces, books, software, etc., and astronomy equipment manufacturers showing off their latest telescopes and equipment. Guest speakers will give talks starting on Friday evening and throughout the day Saturday on various astronomy related subjects. Solar telescopes will be available for viewing our closest star during the day.
A free public observing session will begin at 7:00 PM (sunset) on Saturday evening and go until 11:00 pm. One highlight of the Saturday public star party will be the close grouping of three planets just after sunset. Mercury, Venus and Mars will be within a tight circle 20 degrees above the western horizon, just after sunset. Later that evening, Saturn and Jupiter will be easily spotted. Five planets in one night! Low level red light, to protect night vision, is required. Red cellophane to cover flashlights will be provided for your use. Please carpool so as to limit vehicle traffic at the event.
An opportunity drawing of donated items, worth thousands of dollars, will be held at 6:00 pm on Saturday for anyone who paid admission. Additional drawing tickets can be obtained from Miss Julian and Miss Teen Julian, from 5:00 to 6:00 for a donation. You must be present to win.
Admission to Starfest is only $5.00 per adult, 2.50 for teens 18 and under and kids 12 and under are free. One ticket for the drawing will be given to each paid admission. One daily admission is good for the whole weekend, so save your wrist bands.
