Night at Balboa

July 10, 2011 @ 12:00 am EDT

An IMAX movie, a star party, a talk with JPL Senior Scientist Bonnie Buratti, exploring the highly-acclaimed Reuben H Fleet Science Center in San Diego's Balboa Park…a Night at Balboa can’t help but be truly special…and fun!
The evening starts at 5:00PM. All ticket holders can enter the Science Center at this time if they wish, and are free to enjoy the many (about 100!) hands-on exhibits that make it fun to learn about science. Kids of all ages will love this part…but if you are like me, you will have a smile on your face the whole time as well!

If you have tickets for the 5:30PM talk by Bonnie Buratti, a Principal Scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, then you’ll need to head over to the Community Forum room next. Once Bonnie is done answering your questions, you can head back out to the exhibits or grab something to eat, and the second group of ticket holders will take your place in the Community Forum for Bonnie’s second talk of the evening.

At 8:00PM our entire group (all ticket holders) will get to see the spectacular IMAX film, Hubble, in the world’s first NanoSeam™ IMAX dome…in other words, those lines you used to see when you looked up at the dome are virtually invisible now! The film, Hubble, is a Space Adventure narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio, and for most of us, it will be the closest experience we will have of actually being in space!
peaking of space, just about the time the IMAX film is over, it will be dark enough outside for the star party to begin! Step outside and stroll from telescope to telescope as you look at up-close views of the Moon, catch glimpses of the beautiful rings of Saturn as she slips into the western sky, and check out star clusters, galaxies, and nebulae located way beyond our own galaxy. The star party will end at approximately 11:00PM, but please remember, to have a star party one must have stars. If it is cloudy or we have rain (it has happened!), the star party may be cut short or not happen at all. If you come out for JUST the star party, then we suggest you check the weather report before leaving home.

But who wants to come to Balboa Park just for the stars when there is so much more to see and do! The world famous San Diego Zoo is attached directly to the park and there are dozens of museums from Natural History to Aeronautics to Fine Art and Photography. Food is available in the Park, as are bathrooms; and of course there is plenty of free parking. Tickets to this event, which include entrance to the exhibits, one of the talks, and the IMAX film, are $10 each, regardless of age. Take a look at the regular pricing for just an IMAX film and you’ll see what a great bargain this is. Tickets go on sale June 1st…stay tuned for directions on how to purchase tickets. We’ll see you there!

5:00: Admission to the Science Gallery is open to all ticket holders for as long as they would like to stay and play before the talk and/or movie.

5:30: NASA JPL Scientist Bonnie Buratti speaks to first group of ticket holders.
