Upcoming Astronomy Events

As a service to our community, Sky & Telescope lists astronomy-related events, including star parties, observatory public nights, astronomy talks, and more. Star parties offer dark skies and astronomical fellowship and often cater to families and feature special activities for kids. Public nights give the general public a chance to view the sky through large telescopes, and public talks are a great place to learn the fundamentals of the science and the craft.
You’ll also see online events offered here.
And if you’d like free copies of Sky & Telescope‘s Let’s Go Stargazing flyer or door prizes for your next star party, you can fill out this form.

Observe January's Variable Star

January 1, 2021 @ 5:00 pm - January 31, 2021 @ 12:00 am EST

The American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO), an international nonprofit organization of amateur and professional astronomers who are interested in stars that change in brightness, is working in collaboration with the International Planetarium Society and Ball State University to allow new and seasoned stargazers to easily find and observe a variable star from their home. January's variable star is Pleione, a member of the bright Pleiades star cluster in the constellation Taurus. The stars can all be seen with the naked eye, but using binoculars may make it easier to pick out the individual clustered stars. Pleione is next to the brighter star Atlas in the handle of the small "cup" formed by the brightest stars in the Pleiades cluster.

Those interested in taking part in this month-long event can find a constellation map to help them find Pleione on the AAVSO website.
