Perseid Meteor Shower at the Rolnick Observatory
August 11, 2008 @ 12:00 am EDT
The Westport Astronomical Society (WAS) will open the grounds of the Rolnick Observatory at 182 Bayberry Lane in Westport CT on Monday, August 11, 2008 for an event humans have been viewing for over 2,000 years: the incredible Perseid Meteor Shower. This exciting event will run from 9:00 pm to 12:00 am and is free of charge to the public. The Society is offering this event as part of its continuing mission of community service and education.
The Star Party will offer activities for young and old in addition to meteor viewing. Trained volunteers will be on hand with several telescopes -- including the 25-inch Obsession Dobsonian, the largest available for public use in the State of Connecticut -- to guide the public through the evening sky's amazing sights. WAS members will have free star maps and astronomy postcards, and will be available to answer the public's questions about astronomy. They will also offer suggestions for easy steps one can take to save energy and help relieve our skies of the glare of light pollution. Despite Westport's increasing light pollution and a 10 day old Moon, the brightest meteors are expected to be fully visible at the Observatory.
