Southern California Astronomy Exposition
July 18, 2009 @ 12:00 am EDT
The 5th annual Southern California Astronomy Expo is being held at Oceanside Photo and Telescope on Saturday, July 11th and Saturday July 18th, 2009!
Saturday, July 11th - SCAE Swap Meet & Star Party
Starting at 10 am on July 11th, OPT will be hosting an astronomy swap meet on our property in Oceanside, California. Many astronomy vendors, manufacturers, clubs, and even OPT itself will be offering used, discontinued, refurbished, and scratch-and-dent items for great prices at this special sale!
Once the swap meet concludes at 4:30 pm the day isn't over! Similar to last year, OPT has teamed up with Palomar College in San Marcos to co-host a "star" filled SCAE lecture and public star-viewing party! We will be offering two showings at P-32 lecture hall on the Palomar College campus of the amazing HD- 3D movie, Journey on Mars 3D!- a panoramic presentation of the explorations of the two Mars rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, on the Red Planet. Because of the limited seating available, we have scheduled two showings of the movie at 5pm & 7pm. We are expecting a large attendance this year. Please plan accordingly so you don't miss out on this unique opportunity!
Immediately after both showings of the movie our distinguished guest speaker, Scott G. Lever, will be on hand to talk about both rovers in more specific detail. Scott is a Mission Manager on the Mars Exploration Rovers project with the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena.
To top off the evening OPT will have a variety of telescopes set up at the Palomar College campus for attendees to gaze at the Moon, the planets, and other deep sky objects from dusk until 11pm! Representatives from companies like Celestron, Vixen, Tele Vue, Sky-Watcher, Explore Scientific, the OPT staff and more will be available to show you the wonders of the universe through their newest telescopes! The swap meet, 3D movie, expert presentation and star party are completely FREE and open to the public, so mark your calendars- we hope to see you there!
Saturday, July 18th- Telescope and Astronomy Demonstration
On this second Saturday, also starting at 10 am, about forty different astronomy, telescope, and associated organizations and manufacturers will be at OPT's beautiful showroom location to show off their latest gear and offer free mini-seminars all day long.
The astronomy faire will have food available for purchase on-site with all proceeds donated to the Boy Scouts organization.
Special "one-day-only" low pricing will also be offered on many of the finest astronomy and telescope equipment!
And of course OPT will be doing its giant SCAE prize giveaway! Raffle tickets for the giveaway are completely free- all you have to do is stop by the ticket booth before 5 pm and pick up your ticket (you must, however, be present to win). The giveaway will begin at 6pm, and while we do not have a complete tally of all of this year's prizes at press time, things are looking very promising- we have several huge prizes from Apogee, FLI, Stellarvue, Orion, Meade, Celestron, SBIG, Takahashi, The Imaging Source, and more. Last year alone we gave out over $50,000 in prizes!
