As a service to our community, Sky & Telescope lists astronomy-related events, including star parties, observatory public nights, astronomy talks, and more. Star parties offer dark skies and astronomical fellowship and often cater to families and feature special activities for kids. Public nights give the general public a chance to view the sky through large telescopes, and public talks are a great place to learn the fundamentals of the science and the craft.

The History & Formation of PlaneWave

FreePlaneWave Instruments was founded in 2006 by Richard Hedrick and Joseph Haberman in Torrance, California. They manufacture a full line of Corrected Dall-Kirkham (CDK) and Ritchey-Chrétien (RC) telescopes ranging from 12.5-inch to 2-meter apertures. Notable clients include Harvard University, CalTech, NASA, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Smithsonian Institution, and the Kalamazoo Astronomical Society! In 2019, they relocated to Adrian, Michigan. Mr. Hedrick, the current PlaneWave President & CEO, will cover how the key individuals of PlaneWave met, how the idea of the CDK telescope came about, the formation of PlaneWave, and how its products are developed.
About the Speaker:
Richard Hedrick has a B.S. in Physics from UCLA. He worked for the Particle Physics Laboratory at UCLA where he helped build a 20MeV particle accelerator. After UCLA, Richard was hired at Celestron as the Staff Astronomer and Technical Support Manager. He rose to be the CTO and Senior Vice President and was responsible for product development and co-owner of the company.
