As a service to our community, Sky & Telescope lists astronomy-related events, including star parties, observatory public nights, astronomy talks, and more. Star parties offer dark skies and astronomical fellowship and often cater to families and feature special activities for kids. Public nights give the general public a chance to view the sky through large telescopes, and public talks are a great place to learn the fundamentals of the science and the craft.

Yoga and Mindful Stargazing

Set in the tranquil rural French Loire valley and organised around the new moon when this already quiet landscape will be at its darkest, this retreat will fill you with wonder and curiosity. Mindful stargazing has nothing to do with star maps, coordinates or science facts. It is the pure, immersive experience of looking up at the night sky with wide-eyed inquisitiveness and wonder. When we look at the night sky like that, instead of the stars seeming cold, distant or irrelevant to our life here on Earth, we can feel more in touch with the cosmos. During the daytime this course will also have Zen Meditation, Yoga and Qigong based in the energy of the season. Mark’s yoga works on the body’s energy meridian lines, which are traditionally associated with different times of year.
The course will be led by Dr Mark Westmoquette who has a PhD in Astrophysics and knows his way around the night sky! He’s also taught yoga and meditation for over a decade, and is the author of three current books on mindful stargazing. Mark has been practicing Yoga since 1999, and completed his Zen Yoga teacher training in 2009. He has also been practising Zen under the guidance of Zen master Daizan Skinner Roshi, since 2007.
