Starlight Xpress joins the “8-megapixel club” with its new SXVR-H18 CCD camera ($2,460). This model features Kodak’s 8.3-megapixel KAF 8300M sensor with 5.4-micron-square pixels in an array measuring 18 × 13½ millimeters. The camera housing keeps with the manufacturer’s signature cylindrical design and is 70 mm (2.76 inches) in diameter and 75 mm long. It features a mechanical shutter and regulated, two-stage thermoelectric cooling down to 40º C below ambient temperature. Full-frame exposures download in approximately 4½ seconds via a USB 2.0 computer interface. The SXVR-H18 includes a proprietary autoguider output as well as a 42 mm “T2” threaded aperture. Additional information is available on the company’s website.
