Billed as “radically different,” the new Chronos HD20 equatorial mount (starting at $13,995 US) does away with conventional worm gears, relying instead on precision harmonic-drive gearing sometimes found in motion-control devices that require zero-backlash performance. (You can google “harmonic drives” to learn more about the concept.) The computer-compatible Chronos needs no counterweights, and its unusual design allows continuous tracking across the meridian, unlike many German equatorial mounts. Models are available with capacities from 125 to 1,000 pounds, and the company can prepare a detailed analysis of which model is needed based on your telescope and accessories.
