Phase of the partial solar eclipse over North America

The map’s plotted curves give the fraction of the Sun's diameter that will be covered (the magnitude) and the Universal Time of the eclipse's start and finish.

Sky & Telescope diagram.

During this month’s annular eclipse, strategically placed observers — perhaps on a ship crossing the Pacific Ocean — can use solar filters to view a brilliant ring, or annulus, of sunlight as the Moon passes directly in front of the Sun. (This won’t be a total eclipse, because the Moon’s angular size isn’t quite large enough to hide the Sun completely.)

Outside the central path, land-based enthusiasts in North America, Japan, eastern Asia, and northern Australia will be treated to a partial eclipse, in which the Moon glides over the edge of the solar disk and takes a big "bite" out of it.

Path of the June 10㪣 Annular Eclipse

This eclipse occurs on June 10th in North America and Hawaii but on June 11th in Japan, Asia, and Australia. The horizontal lines show the magnitude of the eclipse in regions touched by the Moon's shadow.

Sky & Telescope diagram.

Because the region of visibility straddles the International Date Line, this event seems to begin on the day after it ends. The first people to see it are those in Southeast Asia who get up at sunrise on Tuesday morning, June 11th. The zone of partial shade then sweeps eastward across the Pacific Ocean, and the event's finale occurs in late afternoon on Monday, June 10th, in North America. Skywatchers in Japan (on the 11th) and Hawaii (on the 10th) can see the Sun well up in the sky for a partial eclipse lasting two to three hours.

Partial Eclipse over North America

Crescents for various North American cities

The little crescents show how the Sun will look, at maximum eclipse, to observers facing it with a safe solar filter. (Click on the image to see views from 16 North American cities.) A black border around a city name indicates that maximum eclipse occurs near sunset.

Sky & Telescope diagram.

In the U.S., more than half the Sun’s surface will be covered southwest of a line from Texas to northern California. (The table on the next page tells when the eclipse will take place at 336 different cities throughout North America.) But this occurs very late on Monday afternoon — too late to dim the landscape abnormally. Keep in mind that the Sun is no less dangerous to look at during a partial eclipse than it is on a normal sunny day. Unless the Sun is very low and appears dull red, don't be tempted to squint at the spectacle or steal unsafe glances just because part of the Sun's surface is blocked by the Moon. Continue to page 4 to learn how to safely view and photograph this eclipse.

Since some sunlight remains visible throughout the event, only the most ardent eclipse chasers will set out on expeditions far from home. But this is a celestial alignment anyone who pays attention to the sky can enjoy, not just astronomers.

Local Times for June's Solar Eclipse

Calculations by Roger W. Sinnott
Senior Editor, Sky & Telescope

The following table tells when the June 10, 2002, solar eclipse will occur at 336 different cities throughout North America, grouped by state or province, in local time. First click on the abbreviation of your state or province (listed alphabetically below), then scroll to the city nearest you.

Three times are given for each place: (1) first contact of the Moon with the Sun, (2) maximum eclipse, and (3) last contact as the Moon leaves the Sun. For each of these three times, the Sun's altitude in degrees above the horizon is also listed.

For the time of maximum eclipse the table tells how much of the Sun will be covered by the Moon, expressed in two different ways. The "magnitude" (Mag) is the percentage of the Sun's diameter that will be covered. The "obscuration" (Obs) is the percentage of the Sun's disk area that will be covered.

Safe Viewing
Annular eclipse of the Sun

On a single piece of film, Akira Fujii acquired this striking sequence of the February 16, 1999, annular eclipse over Western Australia.

A partial solar eclipse that takes place low in the sky, like this one, is easy to view indoors by pinhole projection. A sharper, larger image can be formed by projection through a small telescope or binoculars. Those who prefer direct views, with or without a telescope, can obtain a safe solar filter from a variety of suppliers. Various safe ways to observe the Sun are described in a series of articles elsewhere on this Web site.

Timings of first and last contact at a solar eclipse, once a popular activity, no longer serve any scientific purpose — these times can be predicted today more accurately than they can be observed. But careful timings of the interior contacts by those traveling to the path of annularity can contribute to studies of the Sun's size and shape. Visit the International Occultation Timing Association's Web site for news of expeditions, detailed maps, and weather prospects.

At a solar eclipse the portion of the Sun's disk that remains uncovered has the same surface brightness as if the Sun were not being eclipsed. So any combination of filter, telescope, and camera that works well for sunspot photography can also provide a close-up record of the Moon's limb making its way across the disk — the same exposure time applies. For more information about photographing the eclipse, see "Tips for Photographing a Partial Solar Eclipse"
