Description:

A bright minor planet is strutting its stuff this month in the constellation Leo, the Lion. 4-Vesta is the second largest and brightest main belt asteroid. In early March it’s a 6.1-magnitude point of light traveling westward near the 3rd-magnitude star Theta (θ) Leonis, also known as Chertan. Opposition occurs on March 4th, and it’s nearest the Earth on the 9th at a distance of 203.6 million km (126.5 million miles). This single 300 second Luminance image was taken, remotely, by me at 10:00 pm PDT, Feb 3, 2021, using T-24, the iTelescope.net 622 mm CDK reflecting telescope in the Sierra near Auberry, CA, USA. The bright star in the lower left of the image (confirmed by Astrometry.net) is HD 98248 in Leo.
