Description:
Abell 33 (Also called the Diamond Ring Nebula) is a faint spherical planetary nebula located 2700 light years away in the constellation Hydra. It lies just behind the star HD 83535 which is responsible for the "diamond ring." The nebula gets its coloration from the Oxygen-lll emissions (doubly ionized oxygen). This image represents 9 hours of exposure time over 3 clear nights last week, through the 8-inch Newtonian telescope in our backyard observatory, using Hydrogen-alpha and Oxygen-III narrow band filters (H-O-O palatte). A planetary nebula is a type of emission nebula consisting of an expanding, glowing shell of ionized gas ejected from a red giant star late in its life -- they are unrelated to planets.
