Description:

This is an image of the centeral part of Abell 426, the Perseus galaxy cluster. The cluster is one of the most massive objects in the known universe and is a prodigious emitter of x-rays. It includes the rather bizarre Seyfert galaxy, NGC 1275, seen in the upper right. That galaxy is also bright in radio frequencies and is catalogued as Perseus-A. The peculiar red tendrils extending out from the galaxy core are massive regions of ionized hydrogen, with each tendril having as much as 1M solar masses of hydrogen. The central black hole in NGC 1275 is close to 800M solar masses. The image represents 26 hours of LRGB integration.
