Description:

The central region of Orion, inverted and reversed left-to-right as it appears to unaided southern hemisphere observers when compared to the view familiar to stargazers north of the equator. (North is down and east is to the right.) In this image made from red (18-min), green (21-min), blue (21-min) and H-alpha (60-min) subs taken over a 7.7 by 6.3 degree field-of-view, the iconic Orion Nebula appears at the top left. The Running Man Nebula, NGC 1977, lies just below. Together, they form the hunter’s Sword. The three bright blue Belt stars are arranged in a diagonal pattern rising out of the lower left corner of the frame, with the backlit Horsehead Nebula positioned just above the easternmost member (Alnitak). The Flame Nebula and the prominent young stellar object, blue sigma Orionis, a
