Description:
In mid-October 2025 I traveled to the northern Texas Panhandle, northern New Mexico and southeast Colorado to photograph Canopus from the cities of Dumas and Dalhart, TX; Raton, NM and Springfield, CO, all very close to the northern latitude limit of its visibility. When I took this photo from Springfield, I was situated at 37 degrees, 23 minutes north, at the intersection of two US highways and with a 24-hour truckstop behind my back. Canopus is right above the horizon (circled in white – the light to its left is a manmade light source). Assisting in verifying this sighting are three neighboring stars (from right to left) Eta Columbae, Nu Puppis and Tau Puppis (circled in red). The trip was totally successful as I was able to get images of Canopus from the other three cities.
