Description:

This gif shows 20 minutes in the life of Comet 156P/Russell-LINEAR which was magnitude 11.8 and 57 million miles from Earth, it has a fan tail 0.039 degrees long to the east of the comet nucleus. 156P was at perihelion in its 6.44 year orbit this past November 17 when it brightened to magnitude 10. The gif is a collection of 9 images each 60 seconds long taken from 0122-0142UT with an 11" SCT f/6.4 and an STF-8300M CCD Camera, the field of view is 0.25x0.25 degrees.
