Description:

Periodic Comet 46P Wirtanen comes around every 5.4 years. This pass brings it closest to Earth on December 17 (7 million miles), at which time it is expected to brighten enough to be visible with the naked eye at dark sky locations -- look for it near the Pleiades. This image was captured remotely, early this AM, using a wide field telescope with color imaging camera at the Siding Springs Observatory, NSW, Australia (iTelescope.net).
