This gif of Comet C/2018 Y1 (Iwamoto) shows the comet's nucleus region. The comet has a narrow 5' tail below and to the right of the coma. The gif covers 17 minutes in the life of Comet Iwamoto and is composed of 3 images each 60 seconds long with 7 minute intervals between each image. The Gif field of view is about 1/2 degree by 1/3 degree. The comet moved 0.03 degrees across Earth's sky in those 17 minutes. The comet was about magnitude 8 and was 47 million miles from Earth. Comet Iwamoto reaches perihelion in it's 934 year orbit on February 6 when it will be 119 million miles from the Sun. On February 12 Comet Iwamoto makes it's close approach to Earth when it will be 28 million miles from Earth moving at 0.3 degrees per hour across Earth's sky and may reach magnitude 7.
