Description:

This is Comet C/2025 R2 (SWAN), imaged with our SeeStar S50 telescope low in the southwestern sky in the early evening October 17, from our campground in Anza Borrego State Park. Comet C/2025 R2 (SWAN) was discovered just a few weeks earlier, September 11, 2025, by Ukrainian amateur astronomer Vladimir Bezugly using the Solar Wind Anisotropies (SWAN) instrument aboard NASA-ESA’s Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft, marking the 20th comet discovered through SWAN imagery. Ground-based confirmation came from Czech astronomer Martin Mašek using the FRAM telescope in Chile, who was “very pleasantly surprised by such a bright comet”. Between October 18–21, SWAN passed just 23 million miles from Earth.
