Description:
My mother and her husband recently returned from a lengthy cruise aboard the MS Arcadia, sailing from Southampton to Sydney, Australia. During the voyage, the captain dimmed the ship’s lights for a special astronomical observing session. For those of us usually confined to light-polluted skies on land, the resulting darkness would have been a dream. Taking advantage of these remarkable conditions, my mother captured this wonderful image of the southern sky while the ship was a day out of Perth, Australia. The photograph beautifully shows the iconic Crux (the Southern Cross) along with the striking Coalsack Nebula (Caldwell 99). Well done mum.
