Description:
As the auroral display temporarily subsided to the north, I took the opportunity to look south and was greeted with bright red swatches trying to blot out the southern Milky Way. It was a fantastic view that I never expected to see from my latitude. This image provides a way to estimate the brightness of the aurora to the unaided eye. The Milky Way is an easily discernible hazy band at my location, but only for people with dark-adapted vision. Some of my neighbors were disappointed by the view when they left their brightly lit house and tried to see the aurora.
