Description:
The Eagle Nebula (catalogued as Messier 16) is a young (1-2 million years old) open cluster of stars, 7000 light years away in the constellation Serpens, discovered by Jean-Philippe de Chéseaux in 1745–46. The "Eagle" refers to the area of nebulosity, near the center, which, with a little imagination does resemble (IMHO) a bird in flight. The Eagle Nebula is currently visible in the Southeastern night sky. We saw it at Mount Palomar 2 weeks ago, but I couldn't get enough data collected to get a good image. This image is from 10 minutes of continuous imaging data that I acquired in June, 2016, from the iTelescope.net dark site in Mayhill, NM, and just reprocessed with some new (for me) image processing software (Deep Sky Stacker, Raw Therapee, Nebulosity and Aurora HDR).
