Description:

Dark clouds of gas and dust are silhouetted against the glowing hydrogen gas of emission nebula IC1396 in the constellation Cepheus. The Elephant's Trunk Nebula is the vertical dark region just right of center. Stellar winds and ultraviolet light from a hot, young star above the trunk are compressing the gas and dust and triggering new star formation in its depths. The stellar winds are eroding the less-dense gas and dust , leaving the "elephant trunk" behind it.
