Description:
This image was shot at a new university teaching and public outreach observatory located in suburban Vancouver (Simon Fraser University in Burnaby BC). Despite the area light pollution (limiting visual magnitude 4.4), and only three hours of total integration in RGB, I think that the image is of remarkable depth - although our big aperture certainly helped! The 15th-magnitude spiral galaxy IC 4617 is visible near the upper-right corner of the frame. Simon Fraser University's observatory, which opened in April 2015, is the anchor of a high-profile public space devoted to astronomy, with landscape features that allude to the science of astronomy, and the beauty of the night sky.
