The Horsehead nebula is dark nebula composed of interstellar dust that blocks starlight as well as the ionized gasses which comprise IC434 (the bright red emission nebula that is the backdrop of the Horsehead Nebula). The Flame Nebula on the left is a reflection nebula that is lit by nearby Alnitak (one of Orion's three belt stars).
