Description:

IC 1396, the Elephant's Trunk Nebula, is a large star-forming region in the constellation Cepheus located approximately 2,400 light-years away. This image combines data acquired over multiple observing seasons. From my urban balcony in Montcada i Reixac, the object is visible for only about 1.5 hours per session, making it necessary to combine data from different years to achieve sufficient integration time. Within the Elephant's Trunk Nebula, new stars are currently forming inside dense clouds of gas and dust. These young stars will eventually erode and disperse the very cloud from which they were born. Captured under Bortle 8/9 skies from an urban balcony with no visibility of Polaris
