Description:
IC 5146 is an emission nebula lying 3,262 light-years from Earth in the constellation Cygnus. The central star illuminating the nebula is about 100,000 years old. The nebula is emerging out of dark nebula Barnard 168, also known as Lynds Dark Nebula 1045. The blue reflection nebula below the Cocoon is van den Berg 147. The lower portion of the dark dust clouds silhouetted against the emission nebula resembles a screeching bird, complete with eye and open hooked beak. When I ask myself which species of bird it most resembles, I think that although it does look a bit like an eagle or hawk, I think it most closely resembles a dodo bird. Therefore, I am unofficially dubbing this dark nebula as "The Dodo Bird Nebula". Exposures: Ha:L:R:G:B = 510:145:95:95:80 minutes, completely unguided.
