Description:

I imaged the Elephant Trunk Nebula (IC1396a) over three nights in August 2022. Acquisition time consisted of 5 min images using Halpha (77), OIII (90), and SII (72) for a total integration time of almost 20 hours. This nebula is part of the much larger ionized gas region IC 1396, located in the constellation Cepheus, about 2,400 light years away. The bright rim of the surface of the nebula shown here is the surface of the dense cloud that is being illuminated and ionized by a very bright, massive star not shown in this image.
