Description:

This image taken at 03:59am MST on April 22 showed what appeared to be a meteor that ended in a rather nice explosion as the heat caused by the meteor entering Earth's atmosphere at 110,000 mph vaporized it in a rather impressive display caught in this 10 second exposure. The meteor trail was 10 degrees long before it exploded. The inset on the lower right is an attempt to show the meteor a little better. The image shows a sky field of view of 150 x 120 degrees. The star Vega is the bright white blue star near the middle of the image. Saturn is the brighter white dot only 5 degrees to the left of the meteor. The sky glow from Tucson can be seen on the right side of the image. The Milky Way shows nicely in this 10 second exposure. The brown bands on the left side of the image are clouds.
