Description:

Messier 100 (M100) is a grand design spiral galaxy located in the Virgo Cluster of Galaxies, in the constellation Coma Berenices. M100 lies approximately 55 million light years from Earth, and occupies an area of 107,000 light years. M100 was discovered by Pierre Méchain on March 15, 1781, and Charles Messier determined the position for the object and added it to his catalogue on April 13, 1781, just before he completed the third and final edition. The image is an integration of just over 600 10-second exposures, about 1.7 hours of total exposure time, shot two nights ago.
