Description:

M108 is a nearly edge-on barred spiral galaxy lying 46 million light-years from Earth in Ursa Major. This nearly edge-on appearance gives it a strong resemblance to the shape of a surfboard, earning it the nickname of The Surfboard Galaxy. Most images of it depict it as a small appearing galaxy in the same wide field frame as M97, The Owl Nebula. It is rarely alone at high resolution, like this image, which shows its numerous chocolate brown dust clouds, yellow nucleus, and bright blue star clusters. Exposures: L:R:G:B = 215:30:30:30 minutes = 5 hours, 5 minutes total exposure at f/8.3.
