Description:
This is M27, the Dumbbell Nebula (also known as the Apple Core Nebula), a planetary nebula (nebulosity gases surrounding a collapsed white dwarf star) in the constellation Vulpecula, at a distance of about 1360 light-years. It was discovered by Charles Messier in 1764. In 1970, Bohuski, Smith, and Weedman found that M27 has an expansion velocity of 31 km/s, and calculated that the age of the nebula was about 9,800 years.
