Description:
A real classic and always nice to look at. M81 (left) is a spiral galaxy in the constellation Great Bear. The distance is around twelve million light years. M82 (on the right in the picture) is gravitationally bound to the somewhat larger spiral galaxy M81. Supernova explosions cause turbulent gas movement, which is observed as an outflow perpendicular to the plane of the galaxy. Due to its proximity and brightness, M82 is one of the best-studied starburst galaxies.
