Description:

M81 and M82 are two interacting galaxies about 12 million light years distant. The faint smudge of blue visible above M81 is catalogued as Holmberg IX, and it is thought to have been created through the interaction between M81 and M82 and nearby NGC 3077. This image incorporates broadband & hydrogen alpha data.
