Description:

The orange, red Planet Mars and hot blue, white Star Regulus will only be 3/4 degree apart in the Tuesday evening sky on June 17. At 8:30pm Mars will appear just above Regulus, 35 degrees above the western horizon. The pair are currently the same brightness, and one should easily be able to see the difference in their color with your eyes since they are so close to each other in the sky. Mars is 169 million miles from Earth, Regulus is 79 light years from Earth, 4 times bigger than our Sun and shines 288 times brighter than our Sun. This picture was taken on Monday evening June 16 at 8:45pm. Mars was 0.8 degrees to the north of Regulus, both were magnitude 1.4.
