Description:

NGC 1909, or the Witch Head Nebula, is a reflection nebula, a cloud of gas and dust that does not emit its own light but instead reflects the light of nearby stars. In this case, its blue glow comes from Rigel, the brightest star in the constellation Orion. Located approximately 900 light-years from Earth, it was discovered in 1862 by Wilhelm Tempel and spans more than 50 light-years. Its first photographs were taken between the late 19th and early 20th centuries by astronomers like Max Wolf and Edward Barnard. This image combines RGB exposures from StarFront Observatory (Bortle 1) and Ha exposures from Guadalajara, Mexico (Bortle 9).
