Description:

NGC 2264 is an open star cluster in Monoceros, but the designation is often used to refer to the Cone Nebula as well (seen centre, top) and the region includes the Fox Fur nebula and Snow Flake cluster. NGC 2264 contains mainly young stars, and the region as a whole is a hotbed of star formation. The nebula glows a brilliant red thanks to ionization from S Monocerotis, a bright variable star system. It contains a number of stars, and took some effort to tame while processing the narrowband data!
