Description:

NGC 3521 is a flocculent spiral galaxy. This means that its spiral arms are patchy rather than well-defined like in grand-design spirals (e.g., M51). It is partially obscured by an extended halo made up of faint stellar streams. The halo is indicative of past interactions with dwarf galaxies or minor mergers.
