Description:

This is NGC 4631 in Canes Venatici, also known as the Whale Galaxy. It's a barred-spiral galaxy, seen edge-on, and has been the site of numerous supernovae because of its intense star-forming activity. The activity has been driven by the galaxy's consumption of smaller galaxies, giving rise to the extended faint "plumes" emanating from its disk
