Description:

This is the barred, spiral galaxy NGC 4945, located in the Southern Hemisphere constellation Centaurus. The galaxy was discovered by James Dunlop in 1826 and is relatively close by (about 13 million light years away) and similar in size and overall appearance to our own Milky Way, but contains a much more active supermassive black hole. The data for this image was obtained remotely from a 20 inch Planewave CDK reflecting telescope at the iTelescope.net Siding Spring Observatory near Coonabarabran, NSW, Australia, and represents 4.5 hours of exposure time, divided equally in 900 sec Red, Green and Blue filter sub-exposures. It was processed with Pixinsight 1.8.9 software.
