Description:

NGC 5850 is a double-barred spiral galaxy in Virgo and is part of a small sub-group of galaxies within the huge Virgo galaxy cluster. Although double-bar structures are not often shown in amateur images, they are estimated to be present in as many as 1/3 of all barred spiral galaxies. The outer-most bar in this image is easy to see, it's oriented nearly horizontally and is approximately centered on the very bright inner nucleus. It spans the distance between the two inner spiral arms. But the bright nucleus itself also shows a bar structure that is rotated by almost 90 degrees relative to the outer bar.
