Description:
NGC 7139 is a planetary nebula located in the constellation of Cepheus, discovered on November 5, 1787, by astronomer William Herschel. NGC 7139 strikingly resembles NGC 6853 (M27) due to its characteristic dumbbell shape: a bright band runs through its center, consisting of two bright, opposing condensations, while two faint lobes are present along the perpendicular axis. It is therefore probably a bipolar planetary nebula of the M27 type, and space-kinematic investigations carried out in the early 1990s support this classification. The central bar is in fact the toroid seen almost edge-on with the lobes perpendicular. Furthermore, this nebula, in color images, shows a clear stratification of nebular ionization.
