Description:
To the naked eye, Orion's dagger appears as three stars hanging down from his belt. In truth, the dagger is a bright conglomeration of stars, dust, and gas in a multitude of imagination-igniting configurations. My intent was to reveal reflection and emission nebulae juxtaposed with brilliant star clusters. To achieve the necessary live high dynamic range effect, this processed/cropped/rotated image is based upon a live average stack of 50 frames varying from 343 milliseconds to 1300 milliseconds with no binning. In taking just over a minute to capture all of the data, my daughter and I had plenty of time to extend the night's cosmic journey to other points of interest.
