These red sprites were captured high above Hurricane Matthew during its intensification on Oct. 1 2016. Red sprites are actually cold plasma discharges in the upper atmosphere that are triggered by a very powerful lightning bolt called a +CG bolt. They only last a few milliseconds so they are very hard to see and to photograph.
