Description:

The majestic Rosette Nebula is a cosmic cloud of dust and gas located about 5000 light years away in the constellation Monoceros. The nebula has a beautiful flower-like shape, looking like a brooch set with diamonds at its center, with a complex structure of ionized gas and dust woven around the young star cluster that power the nebula's emission. The circular cloud of ionized hydrogen and oxygen gas is overlaid with a fine morphology of dense gas clouds and bok globules - dark regions of dust ripe with material for forming new stars. This image is based on about 10 hours of image data shot with a 4.5" APO refractor in Bortle 9 over the skies of Toronto, using 3 nm filters (Ha and OIII) to cut through the light pollution.
