Description:
SH2-216 is a planetary nebula located in the constellation of Perseus, approximately 420 light-years from Earth. With an angular diameter of 1.5 degrees, it is three times larger than the full Moon and one of the largest known planetary nebulae. Old and diffuse, it is the remnant of a Sun-like star, whose central star, WD 0439+466, is now a faint white dwarf. Discovered in the 1950s by Stewart Sharpless, it illustrates the future fate of our solar system.
