Description:

A shark attacking. This is how the dark nebula LDN 1235 appears, in the direction of the constellation Cepheus. Its particular shape makes it one of the most extraordinary and curious objects in this part of the sky. Dark nebulae are very difficult objects to detect, due to both their low temperature and their composition responsible for absorbing light. Dark clouds, therefore, can be observed if they obscure part of an emission nebula, or reflection nebula, or when they block the light coming from background stars. This "cosmic fish" is about 650 light-years from Earth.
